Free Book Templates Professional & Easy-to-Use Layouts

book design templates

This site offers five free minimal book layout templates that you can use with a variety of programs, Word included. If you're writing a book and need a template to help you organize your chapters, content, and format, then we have just the template for you! In fact, we have a template for nonfiction books, and a template for fiction books, so you can choose which one suits your needs best. Like typography, typesetting represents an opportunity for every author and publisher out there to differentiate themselves and establish a brand. I'll cover the basics so you know exactly how to launch a #1 bestseller, and when you're ready for it, I'll even give you a more advanced guide to book promotion for indie authors.

Learn how to layout a book, design for print, and publish something amazing with help from our blog.

book design templates

These templates and themes have been designed by our team of in-house designers, who are experts in their field. They demonstrate correct use of design principles such as layout, white space, line, colour combinations and typographic choices. As students delve into these themes, they see these principles of design modelled in action, and will soon begin to put them into practice themselves. For children ages 1 to 5, children's story book covers and fairy-tale book covers tend to use bright, joyful colours that children are attracted to rather than dark colours or pastels. The Alice in Wonderland and Harry Potter book cover examples here target children who are a bit older, so they certainly break that rule.

Themes

Authors who design their own covers often run into trouble because their close connection to their books lead to covers that confuse readers rather than invite them. Many authors underestimate the importance of this step and fail to see how book layout design can actually mean the difference between a good and bad reading experience. A strong book interior is balanced and aesthetically pleasing in its choice of font, type size, line spacing, chapter headings, and margins — all of which should come together to form a perfect whole. Of course, the more varied the book in terms of content (charts, illustrations, photos, recipes, poems, etc.), the more important the work of the typesetter becomes.

To refine your book for publication, you’ll need to take care of its interior design (also known as typesetting) so that each page is professionally formatted.

The Easiest Way to Format Your Book, Without Pulling Your Hair Out.

With these articles as your starting point, we hope you’ve seen why we value book design as much as we do. As authors, one of your goals should be to put wonderful things out into the world — expressions of creativity and ideas packaged in a way that’s both practical and beautiful. When most people talk about book design, thoughts immediately turn to the front cover (or ‘dust jacket,’ if you’re gaga for hardbacks). The most iconic covers have become classic designs in their own right — not only for their visual appeal but also for successfully encapsulating the author’s vision. Organise your treasured family memories with this set of unique family photo book layouts for photos and text.

Not everyone wants to fuss with setting up a book template in Word, and some want more variety in templates to choose from. If this is the case for you, consider downloading a pre-made book template for Word. I believe I've saved alternative formats, so they should work even if you have an older version.

The best format for manuals, guides, or lookbooks, our full color paperback combines value and quality. Bookstore quality printing at affordable costs, our A5 paperback is perfect for your book. Prepare your DOCX file for conversion to EPUB with our free ebook guide.

Your ebook will be an epub file (KDP now accepts epub, like everyone else). Our free templates and tutorials will definitely make things easier, but keep in mind there are special tools and software for this stuff, too. Ebook formatting can be tricky, even if you use my free templates, so I recommend a formatting tool like Vellum; which is also great for print book formatting. Learn about the free book templates we offer and how to use those template files to create a print-ready PDF for your book. Although the cover of your book guide your readers to buy your book, the interior design will make them decide whether they will actually read it.

On this page, we’ve collected the best of Reedsy’s articles on book design. For an in-depth greater understanding of how book design can delight the senses, streamline the reading experience, and sell more copies, start here. Request quotes from 200+ of the most talented cover designers in the industry. The template is well formatted and also includes various sections before the book’s content, like foreward, preface, and introduction. However, it promotes the company’s printing services on every other page, which is annoying since you’ll need to carefully edit that out. The formatting in the original manuscript will carry over, and your book will be ready to export in just a few minutes, complete with a title page, chapter headings, page numbers, and so on.

Lindblad and the National Geographic Society Announce Fellowship

national geographic cruise ships

A few minutes later, a little door swung open at the front of the ship and out popped several of our expedition guides. I was about three days into a 10-night voyage to Antarctica on the new National Geographic Resolution when I began to understand just how special a vessel it was. Kids are welcome on any Lindblad Expeditions/National Geographic cruise. However, they are more prevalent on summer cruises to the Galápagos Islands and Alaska because of the National Geographic Global Explorers programs on those itineraries. There are no specialty restaurants or charges for any type of food on board.

See our advertising policy here where we list advertisers that we work with, and how we make money. Today we explored Bartolome and Chinese Hat, two of the best spots on the island of Santiago. We had special encounters throughout the day, spotting the Galapagos penguin, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies.

Onboard Activities

A cruise on National Geographic Explorer does not come cheap, but you are paying for one of the best expedition offerings with respect to the standard of ship, the number and experience of the staff and the excellent organization. By late January, when I first arrived in Antarctica to test out National Geographic Resolution, the fast ice mostly had melted away in the northernmost areas of the Antarctic Peninsula that draw the bulk of Antarctica expedition vessels. To get us into the ice, the ship had to travel farther south than some expedition ships will go in Antarctica, to an ice-clogged waterway known as Lallemand Fjord. Each ship in the Lindblad fleet is either purpose built to explore a region of the planet or leased on a basis of what they can add to the expedition experience.

More than 600 miles across, the Drake Passage often is roiled with waves 10 or 20 feet high, which can bounce around expedition vessels in what Antarctica aficionados call the Drake Shake. Lindblad Expeditions introduced National Geographic Explorer in 2008, providing the line with the most sophisticated expedition-style ship afloat. It's equipped with high-tech equipment for forecasting ice conditions, underwater cameras that can drop to the seabed and state-of-the-art audiovisual gear.

Take advantage of our additional offers

National Geographic Quest was purpose-built by Lindblad for its mainly U.S. demographic. Drawing on 50 years of expedition cruising experience, you will find everything aboard is cleverly constructed and included (or excluded) based on lots of customer feedback. Meals are served in the dining room, Bistro bar, or the Observation lounge, at a single seating with unassigned tables for an informal atmosphere and easy mingling. The plans to completely rebuild her drew on 50 years of pioneering expedition history and expertise. Her interior and exterior design embodied the Lindblad expedition ethos—the privilege of wildness and the luxury of comfort.

Tenure onboard averaged between five and 10 years, and as a result of clearly feeling passionate about this particular ship, the crew was superb -- dedicated, professional and charming. National Geographic Resolution also sails with an impressive stash of adventure gear for exploring, including the previously mentioned kayaks, snowshoes and cross-country skis. A few hours later, we landed at nearby Petermann Island, famous for a colony of thousands of gentoo penguins. As I've experienced myself on a previous trip to Antarctica, the churn in the Drake Passage occasionally can be even more extreme. Waves up to 30 or even 40 feet high at times are not uncommon — something known as the Drake Quake. Another notable — and very noticeable — feature of the ship is its distinctive sloping bow, which looks almost as if it were accidentally put on upside down.

National Geographic Islander II

Many expedition vessels have either a marina or side doors, but not both. Built by Ulstein, a Norwegian shipbuilding company known for producing hardy vessels, National Geographic Resolution boasts an extra-strong hull that lets it bump through ice that would stop many lesser ships. It carries a polar class rating of PC 5 Category A, a notch above most Antarctica cruise vessels. National Geographic Resolution is an expedition cruise ship — a type of cruise ship that is specifically designed for adventurous travel to remote, hard-to-reach places such as Antarctica. It is up to the passengers to decide what they feel most comfortable wearing, depending on the weather and circumstances.

No, Lindblad and National Geographic are separate companies that have a partnership to provide luxury adventure travel expeditions. Lindblad’s small ships ensure an intimate and personalized experience. On board, you’ll be surrounded by National Geographic experts, including photographers, naturalists, and scientists, so you can make the most of your trip.

After lunch, the ship transited the McNary Dam and Lock, the last one on the Columbia River. Guests were treated to an expert presentation on geology by Naturalist Kyle Bowman, and ‘Lewis and Clark Lead to World’s No.1 Wine’, presented by Wine Expert Eric Degerman. The evening concluded with cocktail hour, traditional recap, and dinner while sailing through the Wallula Gap. We started our crisp and sunny morning with a ride into the boat basin at Sacajawea Historical State Park.

The ship also has a high-end chef's table experience, with a six-course tasting menu. Every passenger gets to try it once per sailing, at no extra charge. Much to my delight, National Geographic Resolution also is designed with lots of interior and exterior observation areas where passengers can get up-close views of passing scenery and wildlife. In addition, National Geographic Resolution can spin completely around in place, thanks to two Azipod thrusters that hang down below the vessel and can rotate a full 360 degrees. This allows it to better maneuver in ice-clogged areas than older expedition vessels with traditional propeller propulsion systems.

At Aitcho Island in the South Shetland Islands, we saw yet another type of penguin, the chinstrap. The next morning, in the Gerlache Strait, we ran across an armada of humpback whales. We stopped for hours to watch them — first from the decks of National Geographic Resolution and then from Zodiac boats.

Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Explorer Cruise: Expert Review 2023

national geographic cruise ships

Lindblad Expeditions/National Geographic has a fleet of 15 vessels, including 11 expedition ships, 4 river ships, and 1 yacht. The newest ship, the National Geographic Islander II, was introduced in August 2022. While cruising with Lindblad Expeditions/National Geographic isn’t inexpensive, almost everything you can imagine is included in your fare both on board and on shore. That means you won’t pay extra for shore excursions, meals, hotels on land, most meals on land, transfers to and from group flights, and activities like zodiacs, kayaks, and snorkeling. Some ships even include things like alcohol, gratuities, and Wi-Fi. National Geographic Sea Bird sailed into Crow Butte in the early morning while guests on the bow enjoyed viewing the Columbia River, which forms the border between Washington and Oregon.

The luxury of small-group exploring

Because the nature and theme of Lindblad voyages is discovery and enrichment, many passengers are college educated, professionals or academics seeking intellectually stimulating interpretation during their travels. You may find yourself chatting at dinner with a college professor or retired judge. When considering Quest for your expedition cruise, know that you will be truly immersed in your destination. You'll come back from the Panamanian jungle sweaty and muddy, but thrilled that you've seen a rare slaty-tailed trogon or been shadowed by patrolling bald eagles in your kayak in Alaska.

National Geographic Quest

Group airport transfers are included and any tips for drivers or porters are handled by the cruise line. In some ports, optional excursion choices are available for an extra cost, as are any pre- or post- extensions you may choose. You'll find most guests will dress informally in brand name adventure wear, even for dinner.

Find a National Geographic Orion Cruise

As Quest is currently only sailing Alaska and the Pacific Northwest in summer and Central America in the northern winter, daywear is important. Not so much from a fashion sense but from a practical point of view for the environmental conditions expected. In the tropics, cool, light and sun smart is the key with long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats and walking shoes and water-friendly sandals like Tevas, Crocs or Keens. In cooler destinations, a beanie, fleece and waterproof spray jackets and pants are de rigueur.

Where does Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic Explorer sail to?

Encounter abundant wildlife—blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas, Darwin’s finches, pink flamingos, giant tortoises and more. The wildlife of Galápagos is legendary for being without fear in the presence of humans. For many guests she remains their paradigm of an expedition ship. She is devoted to exploration—from her Welcoming Bridge, and the Chart Room below it where you can tuck in to warm up with a hot chocolate, to her high-perched Observation deck with its aqueous light and compelling 24/7 views.

Guests had the option of an aerobic hike, nature hike, photo hike, and history walk around Crow Butte and Crow Butte Campground. The beauty of the area awed guests, sporting views of local vineyards, dams, wildlife refuges, and the dry sagebrush-step ecosystem that dominates the area. Guests spied a variety of wildflowers and birds of prey, including spotting a golden eagle. After hiking, guests enjoyed a hot beverage on shore brought by National Geographic Sea Bird’s hospitality team, followed by an informal chat on food, wine, and energy by Naturalist Patrick MacQuarrie and Wine Expert Eric Degerman.

When you’re on a National Geographic cruise, many of your beverages will be included in your cruise fare. Alcoholic beverages are not included unless you’re sailing on select ships. Sailing on a Lindblad Expeditions/National Geographic ship is different than any other cruise line. You won’t find the typical cruise ship activities like pools, casinos, broadway-style shows, or an endless list of activities. Instead, these small ships offer a fantastic cultural experience, local experts on board, and the opportunity to explore remote and exotic locations.

Top Trips for Wildlife Enthusiasts-July 2023

Sadly, not every modern expedition ship has been built with this in mind. When Powell, the expedition leader, realized the humpback whales would be sticking around for a while, he was able to make a quick call to put down the Zodiacs to get us out among them. Such efficiency plays right into the Lindblad style of expedition cruising, where it's all about maximizing the experience in any given destination, even if that means changing plans on the fly. As is typical for Antarctica trips, the seven days of exploring mostly took place along the Antarctic Peninsula, a staggeringly beautiful, 800-mile-long stretch of soaring mountains, glaciers, fjords and icebergs. The outing continued until late afternoon, when we returned to the ship to prepare for dinner. While we were dining, Graser moved the vessel to a spot just off Petermann Island, for an after-dinner landing to see the penguins.

You also won’t pay extra for group flights or activities like snorkeling and kayaking. Generally, you’ll be responsible for paying for tips, Wi-Fi, alcoholic beverages, and some meals on shore. Our newest additions include National Geographic Islander ll, an elegant ship with just 48 suites, sailing the Galápagos year-round, and the Sea Cloud II, a modern-day counterpart to the historic Sea Cloud with 44 outward-facing cabins. With a capacity of just 100 guests, Venture allows for navigation into narrower channels and smaller ports. Landings by zodiac are used for hiking access, but the zodiacs often function more as small vessels in search of wildlife and local features.

This includes all meals on board, as well as snacks during recap. Many meals on shore are also included (these will be indicated on your itinerary). Sailing with Lindblad Expeditions/ National Geographic Expeditions is different than any other cruise line. When you’re on board a National Geographic ship, riverboat, or yacht, all of your food is included. You’ll be able to immerse yourself in your destination during the day and continue the experience on board with daily recaps, plus guest speakers and destination-specific presentations. Lindblad Expeditions/National Geographic does not have any private ports or islands.

Some Lindblad vessels are all-inclusive for beverages and gratuities, but National Geographic Quest is not. While nonalcoholic drinks like tea, coffee and sodas are included, your wine with dinner and cocktails at the bar are charged extra. Wi-Fi costs extra as well, and optional gratuities are suggested at $10 per person, per day. If you've never traveled aboard an expedition ship before, Lindblad's National Geographic Quest is a great place to start.

Many of the islands here are protected marine reserves and state parks, allowing the rich marine life to thrive. Our undersea team ventured out on a dive to explore these waters and to capture the underwater world to share with our guests. The dining room windows ensure that guests enjoy both the scenery and wildlife during dining times.

Lined with glaciers and towering cliffs, the 8-mile-long Lemaire Channel and its environs is one of the great sights of Antarctica, and we used the extra time we had gained from our speedy crossing of the Drake to soak it in. This can be a big deal on Antarctica voyages, which usually begin with a nearly two-day ride across the often-rough body of water between South America and Antarctica known as the Drake Passage. The extra maneuverability means National Geographic Resolution not only can get into an ice-clogged area such as Lallemand Fjord, but — more importantly — can also get out. Lallemand Fjord was so far south that we had to cross the Antarctic Circle — the latitude where the sun never sets at the height of the austral summer — to get there.

Our day of walking atop fast ice in Lallemand Fjord came fewer than 72 hours after departing Ushuaia, Argentina, the hub for most Antarctica-bound expedition cruise vessels. In Antarctica, in particular, the size of a vessel matters when it comes to the quality of the experience, as expedition ships in Antarctica are limited to landing 100 passengers at a time by international treaty. The price you pay for your Lindblad Expeditions/ National Geographic cruise includes almost everything. Beverages like specialty coffees, teas, and soda are also included.
